Anthony Spires
Hi Noel!
Noel McInnis
Hello, Anthony.
Anthony Spires
You're in! I was afraid I couldn't log in early enough today.
Noel McInnis
We've beat the moderator.
Anthony Spires
I just took a quick glance at your postings....
Anthony Spires
I am the moderator. :)
Noel McInnis
Oh!!
Anthony Spires
Or, rather, "moderator mentor"
Noel McInnis
I thought it would be Tom.
Anthony Spires
Tom and Katrina may be able to check in later.
Anthony Spires
But I'm 'running' the chat this am.
Anthony Spires
Hi Keith!
Keith Hopper
(This user is now known as Keith)
Anthony Spires
Have you guys joined a chat session yet thus far?
Noel McInnis
Hello, Kieth
Noel McInnis
This is my second chat.
Keith
Grettings, Anthony. And Noel.
Anthony Spires
When was your first?
Noel McInnis
Last Thursday was my first (with ALL, that is).
Keith
Last Friday - an unnerving experience to begin with.
Anthony Spires
How so, Keith?
Keith
Never been in a chat room before - and not the greatest of typists.
Anthony Spires
I was working during last Thursday's chat. And I tried for 45 min. to get into Friday's chat, but to no avail. I'm still not sure why. Perhaps my ISP was too clogged up - it was Fri. night here in Taipei.
Anthony Spires
One of the advantages of discussion postings over chat - slow (thoughtful) people don't get edged out.
Keith
Yes, still some tech problems to iron out my end.
Noel McInnis
Is there a place we can go to read prior chat logs?
Anthony Spires
I usually don't have a problem logging in, but that night was a killer.
Keith
There's supposed to be - but apparently that's one of the tech problems.
Anthony Spires
I believe Tom is going to post the logs on the website later.
Keith
OK
Anthony Spires
They're only processed on Mondays and Fridays.
Noel McInnis
Where will we find them?
Anthony Spires
So last week's chats should be ready soon, and maybe Monday's. But today's chat and the rest this week won't be ready until Fri. or Sat.
Anthony Spires
There's a website to go to where you click on your course number...
Noel McInnis
O.K.
Anthony Spires
The date of the chat will appear in DD-MM-YYYY format..
Keith
This is good to know.
Noel McInnis
Hello, Tom
Keith
Hello Tom.
Anthony Spires
and you can open a webpage from there. Then you'll have to Select ALL, copy, and paste into a Word doc. or sth.
Anthony Spires
Howdy Tom! I'm in today!
Keith
Anthony's just giving us the info on chat logs.
Keith
Very useful.
Anthony Spires
Then...
Tom Arnold
Hello, everyone
Anthony Spires
you can post the Word Doc. to a separate Discussion topic called "Chat Logs" for all your students to see.
Anthony Spires
So those who missed out on the chat session can see what was discussed.
Keith
Thanks Anthony.
Noel McInnis
And these chats are also posted under our course title?
Anthony Spires
Hi Katrina! I'm in. Yayy!
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, congrats!
Anthony Spires
The website (as it stands now) is actually open to anyone to read it, I think.
Clavdia Minor
Hello Keith, hello Noel.
Noel McInnis
Hi there, KAtrina.
Keith
Hello again Clavdia.
Anthony Spires
And poor Tom doesn't get a hello? ;)
Clavdia Minor
Tom does not appear on my user bar, Tom, are you here?
Anthony Spires
He's in my bar.
Anthony Spires
Pub?
Noel McInnis
And mine
Tom Arnold
Hello, I'm here, Katrina
Anthony Spires
So, Noel - refresh my memory on your course, please.
Clavdia Minor
Tom, you are invisible to me. Shout me a whisper so I can see you!
Noel McInnis
The Power of Forgiveness
Anthony Spires
Way interesting!
Noel McInnis
Way necessary!!
Anthony Spires
I'd like to sneak a peek at your syllabus.
Noel McInnis
Help yourself.
Anthony Spires
Keith, Noel - just in case you don't know - if you try to cut back to the discussions section or something else in your course website, you'll most likely be bumped out of chat.
Keith
OK.
Clavdia Minor
Good tip Anthony!
Noel McInnis
I've already had that experience.
Keith
Yes.
Noel McInnis
So now I call up a new window to go elsewhere.
Tom Arnold
I have to leave now -- Goodbye all
Anthony Spires
That's the way to go, Noel.
Anthony Spires
Bye, Tom.
Keith
Bye.
Noel McInnis
STay inb the grace, Tom.
Clavdia Minor
Bye Tom,
Noel McInnis
Stay in the grace.
Keith
All these hellos and goodnights - it's like an episode of The Waltons...
Anthony Spires
We're just a big, big happy family here, Keith.
Keith
So it would seem!
Anthony Spires
Oh, one other thing about opening new windows - if your memory is low, it may crash your computer. You may want to pass this tip/reminder on to your students at some point.
Noel McInnis
Good to know.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, are you on a PC?
Anthony Spires
I'm on a MAC, of course!
Anthony Spires
I've got loads of extra memory.
Anthony Spires
Keith - your course is on??
Keith
I meant to ask Tom while he was on: while trying to link a posted file to a discussion topic, my machinecrashed: 'A Runtime Error has occurred' Do you wish to Debug' Has anyone encounterd this before?
Anthony Spires
(Apologies to all - so many things/new names and courses to keep up with).
Keith
- and yes, my course is on...
Anthony Spires
Good question, Keith. Let me 'officially' call a quorum - since it is already 10:15 (9:15 somewhere). And let's get on to the topic at hand - posting files and discussions.
Clavdia Minor
Keith, I have been having trouble linking to posted files as well and so has David Holland.
Clavdia Minor
It is one of my tasks for today to deal with tech support some more.
Keith
That's reassuring - though still annoying.
Anthony Spires
I think the Runtime Error is due to some conflict between your software and the website. - (duh answer, I know).
Anthony Spires
I haven't had any trouble in the past couple of days.
Clavdia Minor
Yes, our problem is different, not runtime.
Anthony Spires
Noel, have you tried to post any files yet?
Clavdia Minor
We get an error message saying we don't have permission to link.
Noel McInnis
No, I'm in deep catch-up. Just finished last weeks tasks.
Anthony Spires
Katrina - that's odd. definitely worth checking with the techies.
Noel McInnis
I intend to play in the sandbox today.
Keith
I've had to move between machines for CHAT and for everything else, so I'm still having to contend with different sets of software, etc.
Keith
The Sandbox is very useful
Anthony Spires
I love to play in the sand. It is helpful to practice there, esp. b/c you can't break it.
Clavdia Minor
You all are much better as a group about playing in the sandbox, I don't remember last term being so active.
Keith
Fear of breaking things is a great motivator...
Noel McInnis
I intend to make CMC my 'retirement" career.
Clavdia Minor
I modified my Monday email to address fear of breaking the site.
Anthony Spires
Keith - we just don't want it to be an inhibitor. So, how do you think students may feel about trying to post files?
Anthony Spires
Noel - that sounds great!
Anthony Spires
And a great suggestion, Katrina.
Keith
Depends on their tech knowledge Anthony.
Noel McInnis
I've always preferred collaborative learning, which is difficult to get going in "Hi there!" space.
Anthony Spires
I've only had 2 students out of about 40 post a file to the site. I think it's a little intimidating. Or perhaps they think they're aren't allowed to - I should have encouraged it explicitly early on in the course, perhaps.
Noel McInnis
CMC facilitates the necessary depolarizing of the instructor-student relationship.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, do you have them posting images or text files.
Keith
I tried linking images, and that's when things started to crash.
Anthony Spires
Just text files. There are too many horrible images on the NYT website and other places - our course is on terrorism, you know.
Clavdia Minor
Noel, I think that you can use the groups function to do more "traditional" collaborative learning.
Noel McInnis
Thank you for the tip, Claudia.
Clavdia Minor
Hmm, I would have thought that text would be less intimidating to post than image. Would require less expertise than graphics.
Anthony Spires
Images are such big files, they can get broken up in the transferral process (upl. or downl.) and cause problems. But they're still impt. for some, I think.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, actually, I have been wondering if that is the problem I am having with a broken image in the linking, possibly I should repost with a more compressed image.
Anthony Spires
How much freedom do you guys think you'll give your students in regards to creating their own discussion topics?
Noel McInnis
I will encourage it.
Anthony Spires
CM - it may be, but I'm no expert there.
Keith
I think it's a case of 'wait-and-see' - what the levels of enthusiasm and knowledge are...
Anthony Spires
Noel - is your course going to feature lots of chats or mainly discussions or?
Noel McInnis
I haven't decided that altogteher - possibly lots of both.
Anthony Spires
I think it's probably good to lead by example for the first couple of weeks - create your own topics, then free them up for the students to be creative.
Clavdia Minor
Have you let students create discussions in your class Anthony?
Noel McInnis
The topics I create will tend to be presented in question form, encouraging responses.
Keith
Mainly discussions in my case. I think the chats seem good for making and maintaining personal contact, but the discussions are obviously better for depth.
Clavdia Minor
Noel, I think that is always the best way to get discussion going.
Clavdia Minor
Keith, I may have said this before, but the nice thing is that you can take topics from your chats and use them to create discussions.
Noel McInnis
Forgiveness is far more a question-asking rather than answer-giving subject.
Clavdia Minor
You can also post the chat logs and encourage further response.
Keith
Clavdia, yes, this sounds very useful.
Anthony Spires
For my course, I designed 'reading questions' to help guide the students' reading of the required material - Actually, a bit like a 'comprehension check', although I was advised not to call it that. :) Then I also created separate discussion questions based on the weekly assignments.
Noel McInnis
"Recall" is one of the great advantages of CMC.
Clavdia Minor
Yes, Noel, and I think for your topic that asynchronous discussion where people think about their responses is probably very good.
Anthony Spires
In the last 2 weeks, I've offered students an "Open Question" for them to reply to, changing the heading to whatever they're interested in talking about. Perhaps I should have done this earlier?
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, how did the "reading questions" go? Work well?
Noel McInnis
Essential, in fact, because quick answers aren't always that helpful.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, have the open questions worked?
Anthony Spires
I'm not sure yet, CM. I want to ask for specific feedback on them from my ss., to see if people used them at all or every time.
Anthony Spires
The open questions the first night got more responses.
Keith
What kind of open questions exactly?
Anthony Spires
HOld on folks - my neighbors at my door. (SORRY!)
Clavdia Minor
I have students send topics they want discussed to me and then I post in the appropriate place with lots of credit to the students.
Noel McInnis
Good idea, CM
Keith
That sounds good Calvdia - both for the teacher and the student.
Clavdia Minor
Noel, Keith, do you already have some topics in mind for your discussions?
Anthony Spires
Sorry folks - I'm back. My friend's 3 year old just brought me some sweet beancurd for a snack. Back on topic now..
Clavdia Minor
Keith, you can call me Katrina, I think it is easier to type.
Noel McInnis
Yes. I'm going to ask students to share their greatest forgiveness challenge.
Anthony Spires
CM - that is a great idea. You'd have to get a lot of folks participating for it to work well, though, no?
Anthony Spires
Noel - during the first week?
Clavdia Minor
Well, actually it works okay even with relatively few (8 or 9).
Noel McInnis
This is the "question" I use in all of my workshops and forgiveness coaching. It maximizes relevance.
Keith
Katrina, I do have formal topics in mind but first I want them to tell me why they're interested in this particular subject - then move from the general to the specific.
Clavdia Minor
Keith, sounds good. That will keep them invested in the course.
Noel McInnis
I will begin to encourage it in the first week.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, we have an experts area where we post responses to student questions. Other questions come from emails they send which I ask permission and then post as questions.
Noel McInnis
My major first week questions are the student's purpose for taking the class and what they would like to learn.
Clavdia Minor
So, depends on the question. If it requires an "expert didactic" response, it might go to the Q and A section, if it is more general, I respond a little and post it as an open topic.
Clavdia Minor
Noel, I think that is a good way to start.
Anthony Spires
CM - my dilemma is I can't be considered an 'expert' since terrorism is so understudied and so broad. My students know a lot about particular subject areas, but our challenge is to link them together to create a better understanding of the whole picture. I'm still figuring out how to do this best.
Keith
Sorry folks, but an alarm bell has just gone off. It looks like a drill but I'm going to have to bow out early. Thanks for the chat and the good info.
Anthony Spires
Be careful Keith! Bye!
Clavdia Minor
Bye Keith!
Anthony Spires
What happened to Noel?
Clavdia Minor
He must have bounced out, probably will return, no?
Anthony Spires
probably.
Anthony Spires
hello again, Noel!
Clavdia Minor
There he is!
Anthony Spires
get booted off?
Noel McInnis
I somehow managed to absent myself accidentally.
Noel McInnis
So, apparently, did some others.
Anthony Spires
It happens.
Clavdia Minor
Keith had a building alarm go off.
Noel McInnis
ANthony and Cluadia are now the only ones on my Users bar.
Anthony Spires
And yourself?
Clavdia Minor
We are all yours, Noel.
Anthony Spires
Keith had to leave due to an emerg.
Noel McInnis
Oh, yes . . . him also.
Anthony Spires
Noel, do you have a series of articles or main texts for your course?
Noel McInnis
Yes. The key book is Dr. Fred Luskin's Forgive for Good.
Anthony Spires
I'm wondering what the week-to-week change will look like, esp. in terms of discussions.
Noel McInnis
I also have lots of material on my various websites to which my students may link.
Anthony Spires
Will you be using supplementary materials weekly?
Clavdia Minor
Also, quick question, did you design this course yourself?
Noel McInnis
Dr. Luskin designed the course and recruited me to moderate it. He will join some chats.
Noel McInnis
I will supplement according to the classes' emerging interests.
Anthony Spires
It may be good to provide links to the websites, as well as directly 'downloadable' files - so that some people w/slower connections can get to the 'meat' of the matter immediately, and others can explore/saunter around if they have more time.
Clavdia Minor
Noel, that is great, having the designer "expert" join in really is enjoyable for the students.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony is right, you always should keep speed in mind.
Noel McInnis
The advantage of having lots of material on my own website is that it circumvents the intellectual property situation.
Anthony Spires
I'm jealous. :)
Clavdia Minor
Me too.
Clavdia Minor
Wait, my expert does join in, is that what you were referring to?
Anthony Spires
Noel - the intel. property right issue is big. But I haven't dealt with it at all in my course, other than providing links to the orig. article (when available) and citing as much as possible.
Anthony Spires
Yes, CM - I wish I had an expert to join in occassionally.
Noel McInnis
Yes, CM
Clavdia Minor
Noel, let me get this clear, you are linking to YOUR separate website, right?
Noel McInnis
I have several websites, and will place my own material thereon and then link thereto.
Clavdia Minor
I get worried because the Alliance has the property rights to anything we create here.
Clavdia Minor
Being a younger, unpublished scholar, this is really important to me.
Noel McInnis
Actually, most of the material to which I will link is already there.
Clavdia Minor
Good.
Anthony Spires
This is a problem, CM. I'm not sure what to make of all this, either. I'm sure our 3 universities have researched this heavily with their bands of lawyers, though.
Noel McInnis
I recommend that every scholar have his/her own website.
Clavdia Minor
Hmm, yes, I operate with a wee bit of paranoia here I think.
Clavdia Minor
Noel, are you trained in HTML?
Noel McInnis
Originally. I've used Front Page for so long that I don't remember much about HTML - other than to go to the HTML page when I can't get Front Page to do what I want it to do, and figure out how to tweak the HTML.
Noel McInnis
HTML is unnecessary for those who are not into sophisticate ddesign.
Clavdia Minor
WYSIWYG is probably the easiest way to go.
Anthony Spires
HTML skills can be helpful sometimes on the Alliance website.
Noel McInnis
That's what Front Page does.
Clavdia Minor
Well, the only problem for Anthony and for me is that we don't have WYSIWYG--yes!
Noel McInnis
How so, Anthony?
Clavdia Minor
PC users have built in WYSIWYG...
Clavdia Minor
MAC users have to enter HTML tags for anything special
Anthony Spires
So, I guess it won't be such a problem for Noel, then, huh CM?
Clavdia Minor
Nope, but for us, the only other solution I have found is to use Word, do reveal HTML and then copy and paste with code showing. Sometimes this works.
Noel McInnis
How does HTML come in handy on the Allian website, Anothony?
Noel McInnis
...Alliance website, Anthony?
Anthony Spires
As CM said - because when we cut and paste, it doesn't always show up properly.
Noel McInnis
Ah, yes.
Apr 9, 2002 11:00:04 AM
Noel McInnis
I'll remember that.
Anthony Spires
Of late, my computer has also crashed when I've tried to cut and paste from Word into the Email text boxes.
Anthony Spires
Just remember to leave yourself some extra time in the beginning, in case you need to tweak things.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, excellent advice as always!
Noel McInnis
The "extra time" for tweaking is one of the things I like about drafting some of our materials in advance during this moderator training.
Anthony Spires
Yep, it comes in handy to have a variety of examples to choose from as well as something to get you started. Your course begins next Monday (April 15), right Noel?
Noel McInnis
April 22.
Clavdia Minor
Yes, this was something everybody encouraged Tom to keep.
Noel McInnis
Thank goodness.
Anthony Spires
Bonus - extra week!
Clavdia Minor
I go straight from ending to starting again.
Clavdia Minor
Anthony, how about you?
Anthony Spires
I'm not sure why the staggered approach, though. CM - me, too.
Noel McInnis
Mine is only a six-week class.
Anthony Spires
Oh, I see.
Clavdia Minor
I think so that courses end at the same time or thereabouts.
Anthony Spires
Mine is 8.
Noel McInnis
Most seem to be eight.
Clavdia Minor
Are your new sites up yet?
Anthony Spires
the last course ends 2 weeks later than mine - 10 weeks in all.
Anthony Spires
Not mine - Noel?
Noel McInnis
I don't think so. It's not liosted under "My COurses"
Anthony Spires
It will appear there soon, I'm sure.
Clavdia Minor
I guess it isn't as much of an issue for Noel since he, blessedly, has that extra week. Of course, you still want to get in there and get it going, right?
Noel McInnis
I regret that I must leave now.
Noel McInnis
Oh, yes, I'm very eager to begin.
Clavdia Minor
Thanks for coming Noel. Be sure to email us if you need any help.
Anthony Spires
Thanks for joining us, Noel. Let us know if any problems come up we can help with.
Noel McInnis
Thank you, CM. I'm not bashful about asking for directions - unlike the steroetype associated with my gender.
Anthony Spires
Have a good night - day.
Noel McInnis
Stay in the grace!
Clavdia Minor
Aah, the exception that proves the rule!
Anthony Spires
I'm the rule, folks - the all the time "I know my way" man.
Anthony Spires
Bye Noel.
